Maya Thami is an emerging Nepali social activist recognized for her unwavering commitment to humanitarian service and community upliftment. Born in Bosimpa, Ward No. 1 of Bhimeshwar Municipality in Dolakha District. Losing her mother at infancy and being raised by her grandmother, Maya experienced financial hardship from a young age. Despite these challenges, she pursued her education in a government school with the support of social organizations and developed an early inclination toward helping others.

Her journey toward social service began informally during her school years, where she demonstrated compassion through small yet meaningful acts of kindness, such as sharing academic materials with classmates in need. However, her life took a difficult turn during adolescence when she suffered from serious health complications while studying in grade eight. This led to frequent medical treatments and eventually relocation to Kathmandu, marking a significant transition in her personal and educational journey.

The challenges in her life intensified during the COVID-19 pandemic, when she faced emotional distress and financial instability, including the loss of her elder brother in a tragic road accident and the collapse of her business. Despite these setbacks, Maya Thami displayed remarkable resilience. Rather than withdrawing from public life, she redirected her personal struggles into purposeful social engagement.
Her active involvement in humanitarian work can be traced back to the 2015 earthquake in Nepal, where she participated in relief and recovery efforts in affected communities. Since then, she has consistently dedicated herself to assisting vulnerable populations, including patients in hospitals, economically disadvantaged families, and marginalized communities in rural areas. Her work is characterized by a strong sense of empathy, discretion, and long-term commitment.

Maya is particularly known for her philosophy of “silent service,” choosing to contribute without seeking public recognition or media attention. She believes that genuine social work should be driven by sincerity rather than visibility. This principle has guided her consistent efforts in grassroots humanitarian activities.

In recognition of her contributions, she received international acknowledgment in 2024 in India, where she was honored among social workers representing 40 countries. This recognition highlighted her impact beyond national boundaries and underscored Nepal’s contribution to global humanitarian efforts.

Today, Maya Thami continues to expand her engagement in social service with a vision of creating sustainable change for disadvantaged communities. Her life story reflects resilience, compassion, and a deep commitment to service, making her an inspiring figure for emerging social workers and youth across Nepal.
