Kathmandu, Sanjib Gurung, widely known as Pinky Gurung, is a prominent transgender rights activist and social leader in Nepal with decades of dedicated service to the LGBTIQ community. Born on 5th Poush, 2037 B.S. and a permanent resident of Tokha Municipality–5, Bashundhara, Kathmandu, Gurung has played a transformative role in advancing gender equality, human rights, and social inclusion across the country. Currently serving as a Technical Advisor at the Blue Diamond Society, Gurung continues to influence policy, advocacy, and grassroots empowerment initiatives.
A founding member of several pioneering organizations, including the Federation of Sexual & Gender Minorities Nepal, Mitini Nepal, Cruise aids Nepal and Pink Triangle Nepal, Gurung has been at the forefront of Nepal’s LGBTIQ rights movement. As the former President of Blue Diamond Society, Gurung provided visionary leadership that strengthened institutional advocacy and expanded national awareness on sexual and gender minority issues.
Gurung’s contributions extend deeply into legal advocacy and social justice. Actively involved in strategic litigation, Gurung has supported numerous legal cases advocating for the rights of LGBTIQ individuals, including efforts that resulted in favorable court decisions. Notably, Gurung played a role in supporting cases that enabled transgender individuals to reclaim professional opportunities and access justice. Their collaboration with law enforcement agencies has also contributed to addressing crimes against marginalized communities, ensuring accountability and protection.
In times of crisis, Gurung has demonstrated remarkable humanitarian leadership. Following the devastating 2015 Nepal earthquake, Gurung mobilized financial support for over 100 LGBTIQ individuals, ensuring relief reached vulnerable populations often excluded from mainstream aid distribution.

Beyond advocacy, Gurung is a seasoned trainer and educator, serving as a master trainer on topics such as gender, sexuality, human rights and legal frameworks. They have conducted extensive awareness programs across municipalities, schools and colleges, fostering inclusive attitudes and empowering new generations. Gurung has also facilitated income-generating training programs including driving, cooking, bakery and candle-making to enhance economic independence within the LGBTIQ community.
Their engagement spans multiple sectors, including collaboration with parliamentarians, policymakers, media and civil society. Gurung has served as a central member of a political party and participated in national committees such as the Country Coordination Committee (CCM) and district-level gender violence minimization initiatives. Currently, Gurung contributes as a District Police Partnership member and coordinates social campaigns such as “Green Kathmandu, Clean Kathmandu.”
Internationally, Gurung has represented Nepal in various countries, including Sri Lanka, South Korea, Thailand, Uruguay, Spain, Denmark, Mexico, and India, sharing experiences and strengthening global networks.
In recognition of their outstanding contributions, Gurung has been honored with the prestigious New Ram Laxmi Award. Through unwavering dedication, Sanjib Gurung (Pinky) remains a powerful voice for equality, dignity, and social transformation in Nepal.
