Kathmandu, Sarita Kumari Shahi is a highly committed Senior Auxiliary Nurse Midwife (ANM) serving in one of Nepal’s most remote Himalayan regions, where access to quality healthcare remains a significant challenge. Currently deployed at the Kalai Birthing Center in Soru Rural Municipality of Mugu district, she has emerged as a critical pillar of support for pregnant women and newborns living in geographically isolated and underserved communities.

With more than six years of continuous service in rural birthing centers, Sarita has demonstrated exceptional dedication to improving maternal and child health outcomes. During her tenure at the Jima and Sip birthing centers—facilities established with the support of development partners—she played an instrumental role in strengthening access to safe and institutional delivery services. Despite operating in an environment constrained by limited medical infrastructure, inadequate resources, and workforce shortages, she has successfully facilitated 469 safe deliveries and conducted antenatal checkups for over 1,200 expectant mothers. Furthermore, she has ensured consistent postnatal care through multiple follow-up visits, contributing to improved recovery and wellbeing among new mothers.

Beyond her clinical responsibilities, Sarita is deeply engaged in community-based health promotion. She frequently travels to remote settlements to raise awareness about the benefits of institutional deliveries and essential maternal healthcare practices. Through door-to-door counseling, outreach programs, and school-based health education initiatives, she has effectively empowered women and families with knowledge on safe childbirth. Her sustained efforts have contributed to a notable behavioral shift, with a growing number of women choosing to deliver at healthcare facilities rather than at home.

Working in a demanding and often unpredictable environment, Sarita remains on call at all hours, responding promptly to obstetric emergencies. Many women travel long distances—often under difficult conditions—to seek her care. Her resilience, professionalism, and compassion are reflected in her unwavering commitment to prioritizing patient wellbeing above personal comfort. Since her reassignment to the Kalai Birthing Center, she continues to deliver essential services with the same level of dedication, further expanding her impact.

Sarita’s contributions have significantly transformed the health landscape of the communities she serves. In areas where maternal and neonatal mortality were once prevalent due to lack of access and awareness, her presence has introduced a sense of safety, trust, and hope. She is widely respected not only as a healthcare provider but also as a dependable and compassionate figure in the community.

Her work underscores the indispensable role of frontline health workers in advancing equitable healthcare access in remote regions. It also highlights the urgent need for sustained investment in human resources, infrastructure, and supportive policies to strengthen rural health systems. Through her tireless service, Sarita Kumari Shahi continues to save lives, empower communities, and bring safe motherhood within reach for those living on the margins.
