Dhana Raj Acharya is a prominent Nepali leader whose career spans entrepreneurship, social service, politics and public administration. From his early involvement in student politics and business to becoming the Mayor of Pokhara Metropolitan City, his journey reflects decades of organisational experience, managerial responsibility and commitment to community development.
From Student Politics to Public Leadership

Born in Kaski, Acharya pursued higher education in management and education, earning an MBA and M.Ed. His professional journey has extended across business, education, social service and politics, giving him experience in both private-sector management and public leadership.

Acharya began his political career as a student. In 2039 BS, he became involved with the All Nepal National Free Students’ Union, later assuming various responsibilities at Prithvi Narayan Campus and within Kaski district. He also served as General Secretary of the Free Student Union Council. In 2042 BS, he became involved with the youth organization of the then Communist Party of Nepal (Marxist-Leninist).

His political journey unfolded during a period of significant political struggle and included arrest and detention. These formative experiences strengthened his understanding of grassroots mobilization, organisational discipline and collective leadership, foundations that later influenced his approach to public service.

Entrepreneurship and Institutional Leadership
Alongside politics, Acharya built an extensive entrepreneurial career encompassing books and stationery, publishing, education, agriculture, chemical fertilisers, hydropower, tourism, banking and hospitality. According to his public profile, he has been associated with approximately two dozen business organisations as a chairman, director or promoter.
His engagement with the private sector also extended to business associations. He has held leadership responsibilities in organisations including the Federation of Nepal Books and Stationery Business Association and the Pokhara Chamber of Commerce and Industry, as well as participating in activities associated with the Federation of Nepalese Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FNCCI).
This diverse business exposure provided him with practical insights into investment, enterprise development, employment generation, institutional management and the challenges confronting Nepal’s private sector.

Service Beyond Business
Social service has remained another important dimension of Acharya’s professional identity. His long-standing association with Lions Clubs International included service as Cabinet Secretary of Lions Clubs International District 325 B1 and later as District Governor in 2017/18. He also served as Editor-in-Chief of the Lions Magazine.

His involvement in educational initiatives, scholarship programmes and community organisations further demonstrates his commitment to social development. Through these platforms, he has participated in initiatives focused on education, community welfare and service-oriented leadership.

Leading Pokhara
A defining chapter of Acharya’s public career began with the 2079 BS local-level election, when he was elected Mayor of Pokhara Metropolitan City. His transition from entrepreneurship and social leadership to elected municipal governance marked a significant expansion of his responsibilities.

As Mayor, Acharya has focused on tourism promotion, urban infrastructure, protection of public property, municipal development and international cooperation. Strengthening Pokhara’s identity as a leading tourism destination and enhancing its international visibility have been central to his leadership priorities.

His administration has also addressed issues concerning public land protection, the Firkhe Khola area, unauthorized structures and the development of the Pokhara bus park. These areas highlight the complexities of metropolitan governance, where urban growth must be balanced with environmental protection, public assets and long-term planning.

Tourism remains fundamental to Pokhara’s economic future. With its natural beauty, adventure opportunities, hospitality infrastructure and growing investment potential, the city occupies a strategic position within Nepal’s tourism economy.

Acharya has sought to connect municipal development with tourism promotion, investment, infrastructure improvement and international cooperation. His international engagements, including a visit to Israel, provided exposure to approaches involving technology, smart-city management, agricultural modernisation and local-government practices.
