Binayak Shah, President of the Hotel Association Nepal (HAN), has established himself as a prominent voice in Nepal’s hospitality and tourism industry, drawing on decades of experience spanning public service, hotel entrepreneurship, tourism advocacy and institutional leadership. His professional trajectory—from government administration to private-sector enterprise and ultimately to leadership of the country’s principal hotel industry association—reflects strategic decision-making, resilience and a sustained commitment to advancing Nepal’s tourism economy.
From Public Service to Hospitality Entrepreneurship
Shah spent 16 years serving at the Ministry of Industry, Commerce and Supplies before making a significant transition into the private sector in the early 1990s. Leaving the security of government service to enter Nepal’s emerging hotel industry was a calculated career decision at a time when the country’s hospitality infrastructure was still developing.
His academic background in economics, complemented by specialized training in tourism and hotel management in Europe and Australia, provided him with a distinctive combination of economic insight, administrative experience and practical hospitality knowledge. These foundations were further strengthened through hands-on exposure to hotel operations, human-resource management, service standards and tourism policy.
Shah entered the hotel business in 1993 and gradually developed a reputation as an experienced hospitality professional. A defining chapter of his entrepreneurial journey has been his association with The Airport Hotel Kathmandu, located near Tribhuvan International Airport. As its operator and Managing Director, he has been closely engaged with the needs of international travelers, business visitors and tourism-related clientele.
His years in public administration have also influenced his managerial philosophy, particularly his emphasis on institutional discipline, coordination, accountability and long-term organizational development.
Leadership Beyond Business
Shah’s engagement with the hospitality sector gradually expanded from entrepreneurship to industry representation. Within HAN, he served in several key capacities, including General Secretary and Senior Vice President, gaining extensive exposure to the challenges and opportunities confronting Nepal’s hotel industry.
Following HAN’s 48th Annual General Meeting in 2023, he was unanimously elected as the association’s 14th President. In this leadership role, Shah has advocated policies and infrastructure capable of supporting the sustainable expansion of Nepal’s tourism industry.
Among his major concerns are international air connectivity, airport capacity, tourism infrastructure and policy stability. He has emphasized the need for more effective utilization of Kathmandu, Pokhara and Bhairahawa airports, arguing that the country’s expanding hotel capacity must be supported by increased tourist arrivals, stronger international connectivity, effective destination promotion and modern infrastructure.

Investing in People and New Tourism Frontiers
Human-resource development remains another important component of Shah’s industry vision. While hospitality offers significant employment opportunities, particularly for Nepal’s younger generation, he recognizes that sustainable growth depends on a professionally trained and service-oriented workforce.
Through HAN initiatives and collaboration with relevant institutions, greater emphasis has been placed on vocational education, apprenticeships and practical skills development. His engagement with tourism education and professional training, including institutions such as the Nepal Academy of Tourism and Hotel Management (NATHM), reflects his broader commitment to strengthening the human capital of Nepal’s hospitality industry.
Shah has also encouraged the diversification of Nepal’s tourism portfolio. MICE tourism, destination weddings, sports tourism, wellness and medical tourism, and food tourism represent promising avenues for attracting new visitor segments and extending tourism activity beyond conventional offerings.
A Vision for Collaborative Growth
At a time when Nepal seeks to strengthen tourism as a catalyst for employment, investment and foreign-exchange earnings, Shah stresses the importance of meaningful collaboration between government and the private sector. His career demonstrates how experience acquired across public administration, entrepreneurship and institutional leadership can be translated into broader industry advocacy.
As Nepal works to position tourism as a stronger pillar of the national economy, Binayak Shah’s contribution represents the increasingly influential role of private-sector leadership in shaping a competitive, sustainable and professionally driven hospitality industry.
