Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli of Nepal is set to attend the 79th United Nations General Assembly and the Summit of the Future in New York. Leading a 22-member delegation, Oli will address several important topics, participate in sideline meetings, and engage with the Nepali community in the U.S. His agenda includes speeches on antimicrobial resistance, sea level rise, and financing for the future related to the Paris Agreement. Oli’s visit marks his first foreign trip as Prime Minister for the fourth time, and his first in-person address to the UN General Assembly since 2020.
Oli will address key programs, including the Summit of the Future and other high-level sessions. His schedule involves meetings with leaders such as UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and potentially with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, though a confirmation from India is still pending.
During his visit, Oli will also address students at Columbia and Harvard universities and interact with the Nepali community. The Nepali Permanent Mission to the UN and the Consulate in New York have prepared the necessary groundwork for his meetings.
Bishwa Parajuli, a Nepali expert, advises that Nepal should focus on regionalism, peacekeeping contributions, and climate change adaptation during Oli’s address, emphasizing the need for global support to help Nepal move out of its status as a least developed country (LDC).
