KATHMANDU, Sept. 27: Swostishree Gurukul IB Continuum School organised an ‘Everest Talks’ session on Thursday featuring Mike Harker, Public Affairs Chief at the US Embassy in Nepal.

The session provided students with an opportunity to learn about Harker’s personal journey, life experiences and successful ascent of Mount Everest.

The programme aimed to encourage students to dream beyond limitations and develop determination, courage, discipline and perseverance in pursuing their goals.

The session was linked with the school’s Middle Years Programme (MYP) IV curriculum on ‘National Personalities’, under which students study the lives, contributions, struggles and character traits of prominent personalities.

Sharing his experiences of climbing Mount Everest, Harker spoke about the preparation, uncertainty and challenges involved in the expedition. He said major achievements depended not only on talent but also on determination, courage, discipline, patience, teamwork and resilience.

Harker also reflected on his experience of standing before the Himalayas, saying that the vastness and grandeur of the mountains could make individuals realise their relative insignificance in comparison to the scale of the Earth.

He contrasted the experience with life in places such as Kathmandu and California, where individuals can often feel they are at the centre of attention. He also highlighted the importance of people, experiences and relationships in shaping aspirations and said such connections ultimately motivated him to undertake the Everest expedition.

The interaction encouraged students to reflect on their own aspirations and understand the importance of preparation, purpose, perseverance and courage in achieving their goals.

During the interactive session, students asked questions about mountaineering and discussed the realities and challenges associated with climbing the world’s highest mountain.

School Principal Neha KC moderated the programme. High school students Sparsha Pradhan and Agrata Bista delivered the welcome address and introduced the guest speaker.

The programme concluded with School Managing Director Mina Maharjan and Principal Neha KC presenting a token of appreciation to Harker.
