BIRGUNJ, The cholera and diarrhea outbreak that struck Birgunj and surrounding areas in mid-August is showing signs of improvement, according to the Parsa District Health Office. As of Tuesday evening, a total of 934 diarrhea patients had been admitted to different hospitals in the district. Among them, 862 have already recovered and returned home, while 72 remain under treatment.

Cholera Cases Under Control

Out of the total cases, 193 have been confirmed as cholera infections. Health authorities said that 182 patients have been discharged after recovery, while 11 are still undergoing treatment. Officials say the outbreak, which escalated last week, is now gradually being brought under control.

Outbreak Began on August 12

The first cases were reported on August 12, with scattered patients showing symptoms of diarrhea. Within days, the number of infections grew rapidly, turning into a larger outbreak. Hospitals in Birgunj had seen a sudden rise in admissions last week, prompting authorities to declare an emergency response.

Source Yet to Be Identified

Despite the decline in active cases, the exact source of the cholera outbreak has not yet been identified. Health workers are continuing to monitor water sources and food supply chains in affected areas. Officials have urged locals to take precautionary measures, such as boiling drinking water, maintaining hygiene, and avoiding street food until the cause is confirmed.

Authorities Optimistic

Public health experts in Parsa expressed optimism that the worst of the outbreak has passed, with recovery rates rising daily. However, they stressed the need for vigilance to prevent further spread.
