KATHMANDU, Prime Minister Sushila Karki has announced that her government will conduct national elections within six months and peacefully hand over power to a democratically elected government.

Addressing representatives of the international community on Friday, PM Karki said that holding elections is the government’s clear and irreversible mandate.

In her first address to ambassadors and representatives from the European Union and 26 countries since the formation of her government a month ago, Prime Minister Karki emphasized good governance and transparency, stating that the interim government was formed to set a new constitutional and political direction for the country.

> “Our government’s only clear and non-negotiable mandate is to hold elections. Within a maximum of six months, we will peacefully transfer power to a democratically elected government,” she said, clarifying that her administration is non-political and transitional in nature.

PM Karki stressed that her government’s primary focus is internal stability, ensuring a secure, neutral, and credible environment for democratic processes.

She added that the government is fully focused on election preparation, empowering the Election Commission, and strengthening security mechanisms. Continuous dialogue is being held with political parties, stakeholders, and representatives of the Gen-Z movement, she noted.

The Prime Minister also revealed that the government is studying the possibility of external voting for Nepalis living abroad and has invited international observers to monitor the upcoming elections.

Reaffirming her commitment to multiparty democracy, PM Karki said democratic values and accountability are the backbone of Nepal’s political system and the only path forward for national progress.

She emphasized that her government’s priorities are integrity, accountability, and transparent governance, adding that it is actively ensuring accountability for both past and present actions.

Reflecting on the Gen-Z-led movement of September 8–9 (Bhadra 23–24), the Prime Minister said the protests have sparked new awareness about transparency, accountability, and good governance.

> “The movement reflected the people’s genuine aspirations for good governance, economic opportunities, and integrity in public life,” she said. “It has inspired us all to listen to citizens’ voices, respond to their concerns, make reforms, and deliver tangible results.”
