Kathmandu, The Government of Bangladesh has extended US$1 million (BDT 123 million/NPR 152 million) in assistance to the Government of Nepal to support ongoing relief, recovery and humanitarian efforts following the devastating floods and mudslides in northern Nepal.

State Minister for Foreign Affairs of Bangladesh Humayun Kabir conveyed the decision to Ambassador of Nepal to Bangladesh Ghanshyam Bhandari on Thursday while handing over a letter from Prime Minister Tarique Rahman addressed to Prime Minister of Nepal Balendra Shah.

The assistance will be provided to the Prime Minister’s Disaster Relief Fund of Nepal, according to a press release issued by the Embassy of Bangladesh in Kathmandu.

Earlier on September 1, State Minister Kabir signed the condolence book opened at the Embassy of Nepal in Dhaka to express Bangladesh’s solidarity with the people of Nepal following the disaster.

The Bangladesh Jatiya Sangsad (National Parliament) had also adopted a condolence motion on August 27, expressing profound grief over the loss of lives and devastation caused by the disaster in Nepal.

Following the unprecedented flash floods on August 26, Prime Minister Tarique Rahman had expressed Bangladesh’s full solidarity with the Government and people of Nepal and conveyed his profound condolences and sympathy to Prime Minister Balendra Shah for the victims of the disaster.

President Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir had also expressed deep sorrow over the loss of lives and extensive devastation caused by the disaster and conveyed condolences to the President of Nepal.

The Bangladesh Parliament observed a one-minute silence and offered prayers for those who lost their lives in the disaster. The condolence motion also urged the Government of Bangladesh to take urgent measures to provide necessary assistance to Nepal.

Meanwhile, Foreign Minister of Bangladesh Dr Khalilur Rahman held a telephone conversation with his Nepali counterpart Shishir Khanal on August 27. During the conversation, he assured Bangladesh’s readiness to extend all possible assistance to Nepal and discussed modalities for providing humanitarian support.

The Embassy said Bangladesh’s assistance and solidarity with the people of Nepal during the calamity would further strengthen the longstanding friendship, goodwill and close relations between the two countries.

The latest assistance comes as Nepal continues relief and recovery efforts in areas affected by the devastating floods and mudslides.
